Student Profile #1: Bianca Nickson
What is your favorite yoga pose and why?
Salamba Sirsasana. I love inversions. They give me the chance to see the world from a completely different perspective. Each pose is a challenge, and every time I practice, it encourages me to find both balance and strength at once. It’s a powerful reminder that carries over into everyday life.
How long have you been coming to Yoga Horizons ( and/or Yoga Circle, if applicable)? What keeps you coming back?
I’ve been coming to Yoga Horizon for about four years now. As the only Iyengar studio in Chicago, it’s truly something special, and I’m so grateful that the Yoga Circle was able to continue. Yoga Horizon offers exceptional teachers and a warm, supportive community that makes it a joy to return again and again.
What draws you to Iyengar yoga?
I’ve practiced Vinyasa, Hatha, and Iyengar yoga, but Iyengar feels like the truest form of yoga to me. B. K. S. Iyengar described it as “meditation in action,” and that’s exactly what it is for me. Each class is thoughtfully built step by step, like building blocks, allowing you to deepen your understanding and awareness with every pose.
What is one thing you have learned about life, the universe, and/or everything from your yoga practice?
“A subtle body creates a subtle mind,” as one of my teachers used to say. Yoga has taught me to stay grounded and to approach life with a calmer, more positive mindset. It has truly become an essential part of my everyday routine.
Do you have a favorite spot to eat / hang out in the neighborhood? What do you like about it?
After class, I love stopping by La Boulangerie on Wilson for a lovely cappuccino and one of their delicious baked goods.
